March 19, 2011 (Kearny, NJ) West Hudson Commuters have an additional means of access to mass transit and can go Green while doing it. The Hudson County Transportation Management Association is running a commuter shuttle from the Arlington Bus Loop in North Arlington (just north of the Belleville Turnpike) on Ridge Road then along Kearny Avenue to the Harrison Path Station on South Frank E. Rodgers Blvd.

The idea behind the project funded in part by Federal Transportation Grants is to reduce traffic and carbon emissions and to provide a transit service to an area in need. The Kearny Shuttle will run from the Arlington Loop in North Arlington starting at 6:20 a.m. and continuing at 6:55 a.m., 7:35 a.m., 8:20 a.m., 9:00 a.m. The return trips from the Harrison Path in the evening will be at 4:30 p.m., 5:10 p.m., 5:50 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.

Pick-ups in the morning and drop offs in the afternoon will only be at NJ Transit bus stops. The bus will not however pick up passengers along its route when returning in the afternoons.

KOTW applauds the efforts of the Hudson County Transportation Management Association in its efforts to provide a much needed option to local commuters. New Jersey Transit used to provide service to the Path train with its No. 39 (now No. 30) bus prior to the closing of the Jackson Street Bridge for repairs. The New Jersey Transit bus used to go down Kearny Avenue, down Frank E. Rodgers Blvd, past the Path Station and into the Ironbound Section of Newark. The return of New Jersey Transit buses down the same route would provide a much needed commuter service.

The Hudson County Transporation Management Association along with the Mayors and elected officials of North Arlington, Kearny, Harrison and Newark should seek to have New Jersey Transit resume the old route of Bus No. 39 (now No. 30). There is no reason why New Jersey Transit could not adjust the No. 30 bus route and elected and planning officials should require the change. A Bus link to the Harrison Path station is just a smart move all around.

New Jersey Transit recently added a bus stop at the corner of Guyon Boulevard and South Frank E. Rodgers Blvd to its No. 40 bus. The New Jersey Transit No. 40 bus does not however go down Kearny Avenue in its route past the Harrison Path Station. It also provides less frequent service than the New Jersey Transit No. 30 bus. May we also suggest that New Jersey Transit update its route map for the No. 30 bus to correctly identify the correct street name Frank E. Rodgers Blvd rather than the old name N. 4th St. Frank E. Rodgers deserves that much from New Jersey Transit.
